Start Searching Now
Don't wait any longer to start your search. The June 12, 2021 deadline is coming quick, and you’ll need to leave time for product research, demonstrations, installations and training.
Do Your Homework
Most of the Canadian ELD Mandate requirements are concerned with how the devices and systems collect, store, and report log data. Be aware that there may be more features available to you than you need – take the time to choose which features will help you reach your business goals while meeting the ELD requirements.
Understand How Your Decision Will Impact Your Fleet
- Does your ELD solution comply with the Canadian ELD mandate?
- Are you using your GPS to track the most beneficial data for your business?
- Are there features you should be adding or removing?
- Will the service you choose integrate with your other systems and devices?
- Is the ELD solution user friendly?
Understand the Hardware and Software
- Will you have to install or change hardware in order to be ELD compliant?
- Will you have to update the hardware or software in the future?
- What supports are available to you from the service provider you choose long after June 12, 2021?
Develop an Implementation Plan
This plan should provide detailed timelines and areas of responsibility from start to finish. Additionally, you should schedule regular meetings to check on overall progress.
Train Your Drivers
Allow as much time as possible to provide drivers with training on how to use the device. Drivers using an ELD should know how to do the following before the mandate deadline:
- Respond to unassigned driving hours the ELD records
- Record 'Duty Status' changes
- Log edits (fleet and driver)
- Add notes to records to explain any edits or additions
- Certify records to indicate that they are complete and accurate
- Access RODS data from the ELD
- Review and understand the ELD display information
- Transfer ELD data by email to inspectors or law enforcement
- Report data diagnostic issues
Be Aware of Non-compliance Implications
After the June 12, 2021 Canadian ELD Mandate deadline, if a non-exempt driver is caught without a compliant ELD, fines may be issued to the carrier. In some cases, the driver may be placed out of service.
